Helping Your New Dog Settle In

Have you recently adopted a dog? Congratulations! We love seeing our canine buddies go to loving homes. Changing owners is a big deal for Fido, however, so he may need some time to adjust. Read on as a local London, ON vet discusses helping your pup settle in to his new domain.

You’ll need to make a trip to the pet store before you bring Fido home. Your shopping list should include food, toys, treats, bedding, grooming supplies, and a leash and collar. We also recommend getting a crate or carrier for travel. Of course, if you want to go all out, get your furry friend a doghouse, too!

Fido will be much more likely to run off or get lost before he’s settled in. If you have a yard, make sure that your fence is sturdy. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.

Veterinary Care

A trip to the vet’s is definitely on the agenda. Fido should be brought up to date on his vaccinations and parasite control products. If your pooch has not been spayed or neutered yet, you’ll want to see to that as well. A thorough exam is also in order. While you’re there, ask your vet for advice on your pup’s food, exercise, and general care needs.

Getting To Know Fido

Just like people, every dog is unique. Keep in mind that your furry buddy may have some quirks and traits you don’t know about yet. For instance, Fido may be terrified of thunderstorms, or unable to resist chasing squirrels. Get a sturdy leash and collar for your pup, ones he can’t easily break or get out of.

Our canine companions are wonderful friends and companions, but they aren’t perfect. However, you should never punish your dog for misbehaving. Focus on rewarding good behavior instead. If your new pooch has behavioral issues, ask our vet or a professional dog behaviorist for advice.

Tail Wags

Some dogs are very friendly, and will immediately become bffs with their new human pals. Others will need more time to adjust. Don’t force attention on your dog. Just focus on proving great care and lots of love. Treats and toys will also help your furry pal feel safe and happy.
