Cold Treats for Cats

The dog days of summer are here! This can be a hard time of year for our feline friends. Fluffy doesn’t have an easy way to cool off on hot days. She can only sweat through her paw pads, and panting isn’t as effective for her as it is for dogs. Read on as a London, ON vet lists some cool snacks you can give your kitty.

Cat Milk

Contrary to popular belief, cow’s milk really isn’t a good treat for cats. However, you can give your furball cat milk, which you can find in many pet stores. Keep it in the fridge to cool it down.

Ice Water

Making sure your furry buddy always has plenty of water is very important. On really hot days, drop an ice cube into Fluffy’s bowl to cool the water down. Your pet may also appreciate a kitty fountain or automated waterer.

Sodium-free broth is actually a great treat for Fluffy. Offer your kitty a small bowl of fish, beef, or chicken broth.

Deli Meat

Your feline buddy can enjoy some cold, shredded deli meat, such as turkey, chicken, or roast beef. Skip the fattier meats, such as pepperoni.

Chilled Food

While not all kitties will want their supper on ice, some of our feline pals may not mind having their dinner chilled. See if your cat enjoys having her food kept in the fridge on hot days.

Kitty Ice Cream

Did you know there is actually ice cream made for cats? Fluffy’s summer treat uses chicken fat, egg, and whey. Check local pet stores to see what they have available.

Ice Cubes

You can make Fluffy her own batch of ice cubes by pouring tuna water or sodium-free broth into an ice cube tray, and freezing. Your furball may also like plain water ice cubes. (Note: don’t be surprised if you catch your kitty playing hockey with her snack. Because cats use their paw pads to regulate their temperature, this can be a great way for them to cool down.)

Take a can of Fluffy’s favorite canned food, and add a little water to it. Freeze it in a paper cup, and then let your furry pal have her snack.
