5 Ways to Get Fit With Fido in 2019

Happy New Year! Today, many people are setting new resolutions for the coming year. It’s always great to work on improving yourself. Understandably, fitness is often included in people’s resolutions. If one of your aims for the new year is to get into shape, why not include your furry friend in your regimen? A London, ON vet offers tips on getting fit with Fido in this article.

Some of our canine buddies make great jogging buddies. Just be sure to build Fido’s endurance up slowly, so you don’t overexert him. One way to do this is to start by alternating walking and running.

Dogs love to explore, so many of them really enjoy going on hikes with their owners. Bring plenty of water along for Fido! You may want to get a collapsible doggy dish, or a pet water bottle with an attached bowl.

Sprinting is a great way to build endurance. If you have a yard, you and Fido can do some sprinting exercises. You can also try playing Tag with your furry pal. Take turns chasing him, and having him chase after you.

You can also include Fido in your regular workouts. For instance, pick up a dog toy before you do sit-ups. Every time you come up, toss the toy. You can also try holding one of your pup’s playthings out when you do squats. When you stand up, move the toy to your other hand. Your canine pal will run and jump to keep up with it.

Needless to say, this one will have to wait for warmer weather. However, if your furry buddy likes to swim, you may both enjoy spending time in the water this summer. Swimming can be a great workout, as it’s easy on the bones and joints.

All dogs are different, and they all have their own unique exercise needs. Not all pooches are well-suited for vigorous workouts. For example, small breeds, senior dogs, and brachycephalic dogs should not be encouraged to exercise heavily. Big dogs, on the other hand, shouldn’t jump or stand on their back legs too much, as this can be hard on their hips. Ask your vet for specific advice.
