Tips for Boarding Fido

Are you going out of town soon? If so, your pup may spend that time in a pet hotel. While Fido would no doubt prefer to be home with his best friend (you), it will give you a lot of peace of mind to know that your furry companion is safe and sound, and in professional hands. Here, a London, ON vet discusses bringing your dog to his home away from home.

Some kennels allow you to bring your canine pal’s things from home. Others prefer to use their own supplies. (Note: this is often to reduce the risk of flea infestations.) Before bringing Fido to his doggy hotel, ask what you should and shouldn’t bring. If you pack food, treats, and/or medication, include at least a few days’ extra, just in case. As the saying says, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Your dog may be on a slightly different schedule for meals at the kennel than he is at home. Ask the kennel about their routines. If it’s significantly different from what you do at home, start adjusting your canine buddy before his trip. Also, if possible, pack Fido’s regular food.

Keep Records

Any reputable kennel will want proof that your pooch is registered and current on key vaccinations, such as rabies and distemper. Fido may also need to get a Bordetella shot, which protects him from kennel cough. Make sure you have copies of your pet’s paperwork with you. (Note: this may not apply if you board with your vet, as they would have that information already.)

Ask Questions

Policies and procedures can vary wildly from kennel to kennel. Don’t assume that things are run exactly as they were at other kennels. For instance, some kennels may call with minor questions, some will only contact you in case of an emergency, and some may ask you for instructions on this. You may want to write down a list of your questions, to be sure you haven’t forgotten anything.

Once you’ve dropped your furry friend off, you’ll be able to focus on your own trip. Fido will be waiting for you with doggy kisses, tail wags, and happy dances when you get home!
