Adopting a Rescued Bird

January is Adopt A Rescued Bird Month! Helping our animal companions find loving homes is always an important cause. However, these efforts often focus on dogs and cats. This of course isn’t a bad thing. We love seeing Fluffy and Fido get second chances! But there are also many smaller pets, like birds, bunnies, and Guinea pigs, that also need good homes. Read on as a London, ON vet discusses adopting a rescued bird.

Things To Consider

Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment, think things over carefully before proceeding. Birds get very attached to their humans. For a bird that has already been rescued or rehomed at least once, changing owners again could be devastating. If you are looking at a specific bird, learn about her breed. Each type of bird has their own unique care needs. You’ll also want to consider your new pet’s expected lifespan. Some birds can live 50 years or even longer. Before proceeding, make sure that you are ready, willing, and able to make that sort of commitment. You’ll also want to consider Polly’s volume button. Some of our feathered friends are very loud!

Bringing Polly Home

Have a roomy, comfortable cage ready and waiting for Polly when you bring her home. This should be in a quiet corner, where she can see and hear you without being surrounded by commotion. Put her into her cage, and just let her adjust. It takes at least a week or two for birds to get settled into a new home and start feeling safe. Don’t try to handle Polly right away. To help her get used to you, talk to her gently and offer toys and treats. Just spending time with your bird will also help. Pull up a comfy chair beside the cage, and make that your spot for reading.

Helping Rescued Birds Thrive

One of the first things you’ll want to do is take Polly to the vet for a thorough exam. While you’re there, get some specific advice on your winged pal’s care needs. Aside from that, just focus on offering great care, and getting to know your new pet. It may not take your feathered buddy very long to melt your heart. Birds really are adorable pets!
