Ways to Celebrate Pet Appreciation Week

Pet Appreciation Week starts June 7th. There are many reasons to appreciate our animal companions. Fluffy and Fido are much more than furry little roommates. They also serve us as cheerleaders, pillows, blankets, comic relief, personal trainers, playmates, confidantes, cuddle buddies, sleep aids, and therapists. Whew! That’s a long list of duties, all of which are definitely worth appreciating! A London, ON vet offers some tips on celebrating this special week below.

Treats

One thing all of our patients have in common is a love of treats. Cats and dogs may enjoy some plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken, or sodium-free broth. Reptiles, birds, and pocket pets all have their own unique requirements. Just be sure to stick with things that are safe for your pet. Ask your vet if you aren’t sure.

Toys

Toys will always brighten a pet’s day up. You may want to make something for your animal companion. If you have kids at home, this can also be a great project for them. For example, you can make Fido a rope toy by cutting an old shirt or towel into strips and braiding the strips together. Or, sew Fluffy a little catnip toy out of fabric scraps. Many pets would also enjoy a box castle or a small pet tent. Look online for specific ideas and instructions.

Photo

There’s just no such thing as too many great pet photos. Experiment with different settings, and see what works the best. You can also try out various photo editors and effects. Then print out your favorite and frame it. Here’s another idea for the kids: have them draw their favorite photo.

Playtime

Playing is great for both you and your pet. No matter how bad your day went, it’s always fun to watch a playful pet running after their favorite toy. This is wonderful stress release for you, and a great way to keep your animal buddy in shape!

Snuggles

Last but not least, be sure to spend some quality time with your animal companion this week. Pick out a good movie, and settle in with your furred, scaled, or feathered friend. You may find that it’s these quiet moments with your pet that you appreciate the most!
